Japan is the world's second largest cosmetic market, only after the U.S.A. The market size reached over JPY 1,500 billion (US$ 15.3 billion / EUR 11.7 billion) in 2008 according to the statistics of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
It's important to note that the Japanese beauty salon business contributes substantially to the overall cosmetics market. The esthetic salon market generated over JPY 400 billion (US$ 4.08 billion / EUR 3.1 billion) and the nail salon market was expected to have grown to JPY 199.5 billion (US$ 1.99 billion / EUR 1.47 billion) in 2008.

Since deregulation was implemented in 2001, the ever-increasing volume of imported cosmetics has been distributed through such diverse channels as esthetic salons, nail salons, Spas, cosmetic specialty stores, large drug stores and convenience stores.
The Cosmetic Importers Association of Japan reported that the import of cosmetic products to Japan reached JPY 171.6 billion (US$ 1.75 billion / EUR 1.34 billion) in 2008. It showed a slight decrease compared with that in 2007 largely because of the sharp depreciation of the US Dollar and the Euro against the Yen influenced by the global economic depression. However, the shipment value of cosmetic products in Japan was over JPY 1,500 billion in each of the last 2 consecutive years, indicating the underlying strength of the Japanese cosmetics industry. It is expected that the Japanese cosmetics market will experience further growth when the economy recovers.

The Japanese beauty industry is valued as one of the most lucrative and promising markets in the Asia-Pacific region. The market has been growing to meet the demands of discerning Japanese consumers who seek high-quality and fashionable products. In general, once a product thrives in this leading marketplace in Asia, it will achieve strong competitiveness in the neighboring countries including China, Taiwan and South Korea.
